Early Pregnancy Back Pain

Normal and short-term phenomenon

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Early pregnancy back pain is a normal phenomenon in this most beautiful period of a woman's life. Most of the expectant mothers witness some degree of back pain during the early phase of pregnancy and this pain generally subsides after about 20 weeks. Backache or spasm, which is reflected by stretching of muscles or burning pain in the left or the right side of the quadrant, is normally the result of the softening of the supporting ligaments and disks due to an increase in the progesterone hormone during the early stage. In some cases, urinary infection during pregnancy can also result in pain in the back amongst pregnant women. The extra weight of a pregnant women's body and the change in her centre of gravity also result in backaches and pain.

Remedies For Pregnancy Back Pain

The most important and safe remedy for the treatment of early pregnancy back pain is exercising. This is mainly because certain medications for back related pain is contraindicated during early pregnancy. Walking, pelvic rocking, bridging (done by lying down on the floor, bending your knees and lifting your buttocks into air), mini-crunches (done by lying down on the floor), bending your knees and lifting your head on exhalation, are good exercises for relief from pack pain during early pregnancy. Pregnant women do these exercises on their own to relieve back pain.

The right body posture and good body mechanics also play an important role in keeping one free of early pregnancy back pain. The right posture for prevention of back pain is standing straight and tall. However, the importance for correct postures is as essential in early pregnancy as before that. However, in late pregnancy, as the uterus becomes big, one tends to pull back her shoulders to offset the additional weight, which results in a back strain. You can reduce this pain during later stages in such a position by frequently changing your sitting position and avoiding standing for long periods.

Adequate rest and sleep are also essential for avoiding or eliminating early pregnancy back pain. You should take proper rest and avoid strenuous activities to avoid it during your pregnancy. You can also do normal yoga exercises to eliminate minor pain. However, if it persists you should consult your doctor and take proper medication for relief from back pain. In some cases of pain in the back, doctors may prescribe physiotherapy for relief. Massages and use of special mattresses are also effective for back pain relief during pregnancy.

One thing all busy full time stay at home mothers want is peace of mind knowing at all times where their child is and what they are doing. With the Joovy Room Squared Play Yard you will know at all times that your child is safe and secure, giving you as a Mom the freedom to run your busy household. This portable child play area can be easily moved inside the house or outside, and can be taken with you on trips as it comes with an carry bag and shoulder strap.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Here are some of the more notable features for the Joovy Room 2 which I think you will find most beneficial. It is made from high quality and durable 600D polyester fabric. It has a one hundred percent cotton fitted mattress with sheets to match. The play area is ten square feet with panels that are thirty inches in height. Like other play yard products, it has no weight limit unlike the thirty pound Graco weight limit. The contemporary cool design is available in red or black and blends in quite will with any modern decorum.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Some of these product details will be important for you to consider. When fully assembled the Joovy Room 2 is thirty one inches in height, almost forty two inches wide, and fourty inches in depth. The carrying weight is a little more than thirty pounds when packed, and it comes with a quality made carry bag and shoulder strap. The play area when assembled is over 10 square feet of play area, which is fifty percent more play area than other popular brands. This product is fully portable, and it easily folds up for moving around the house, or when on vacation.

The Joovy Room Squared Portable Play Yard is a high quality and spacious pack and play type of portable play area. Every parent needs a way to take a moment while not having to worry about where their child is at all times and exactly what they are doing. With this play area is quite easy for you to relax for a moment while your child plays safely and securely. You do not have to worry about them climbing out, or scampering away from you as the four sides of this play yard and 30 inch high panels easily keep your child secure. This product is made from a high quality 600D polyester fiber material which means it will take any punishment your child can dish out and endure for a very long time. It also means this material is easy to keep neat and clean for the times your child makes a mess.

Not only is this product made from high quality materials, it has a much larger play area than the leading brand of pack and play. Once the play area is folded out and assembled it provides just over 10 square feet of play area for your child, which is 50% more than other competing brands offer. The sides of the play yard are made of a durable mesh material making it easy for you to see what your child is dong at any time, and so that your child does not feel confined. The frame of the Joovy Room Squared is made from durable and light aluminum tubing, and not cheap plastic like other brands and manufactured to last a very long time.

The bottom of the play area has a thick foam padded mat on it making it a comfortable place for your baby or toddler to play on. This pad comes with a cotton fitted sheet that is easily washable, and there are additional sheets available in case you need that as well. When it is time to move your Joovy Room Squared it conveniently folds up, and slips in to a high quality deluxe carry bag with shoulder straps. Winter Travel Safety with Baby

Sudden snow storms, blizzards, and sleet are some of the hazards you might face when traveling during the winter months. People who live in areas prone to winter weather are used to the harsh conditions. But those of use who do not live in these locations need to take precautions when traveling there. Especially when traveling with children.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Whether you are visiting relatives in the northern states or just driving to the local mountains for a day in the snow, you will want to be prepared for any event. There are some things you can do, and bring, to help you survive an unexpected incident.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Before you leave

Check the local weather channel for the current and projected forecast. If there is a chance of bad weather, then do not go. Nothing is worth risking your family's safety.

Make sure your cell phone is charged before you leave, but be aware you might not have service everywhere along your route. It is possible, should you become stranded, and you might have to hike to find a signal.

Arrange to call someone when you get there. Should this person not hear from you in the allotted time, they can call the authorities for you? Also, be sure to let them know what route you will be taking, so they can alert rescue personal where to look should they not hear from you.

Your Emergency Bag

When packing your vehicle for the trip, consider putting these items into your car, just in case.

Blankets, Sweaters or Sleeping Bags The biggest danger you face, if bad weather strands you in your car, is the loss of body heat. Bundling up will extend the time you can stay in your car until help arrives.

Food and Water You want to keep food and water in an emergency bag in your car. Bottled water is the easiest to buy and store. You should keep about one gallon per person. You also want to keep high-energy food in your emergency bag as well. Pretzels, granola bars, and breakfast bars are good choices to keep. These kinds of things do not go bad over time, and can be very filling.

Light Sources Keep a good flashlight, with spare batteries, in your bag. You can also keep some of those glow sticks in the bag, to help keep your kids entertained and less afraid. Most camping supply stores carry emergency flashlights and glow stick.

First Aid Kit Every person, whether they have kids or not, should have a first aid kit in their car. Emergencies happen without warning and you never know when you might need a bandage.

Extras to Pack

Kid Items If you have an infant pack extra diapers, wipes and powdered formula. Pack small toys or an entertaining game for older kids to play. If you should become stuck somewhere, you want to be able to keep your children calm and distracted from what is happening.

Should You Become Trapped

First thing you should do is remain calm. Panic will not help and will only make things worse. Take some deep breaths and remember you are prepared for this.

Second, do not leave your car unless absolutely necessary. Your best chance for being rescued is to stay with your car. It is safer to remain where you are than to try to find your way in unfamiliar territory.

Prepare yourself ahead of time, before you get into your car to go for that winter drive. Pack your car with the proper gear to insure your family has the supplies they will need should the unthinkable happens. That, along with a cool head, is what you will need to keep your family safe.

10 Useful Tips On Preparing For Your First Newborn

When you're a first-time parent, the urge to buy tons of cute, new stuff for your baby is overwhelming. There are so many cool gadgets, products, clothes and more for your little one ... not to mention all the already-parents telling you what you absolutely have to have in order to survive as a new parent. I am 38 weeks pregnant with my first child - a boy named Quentin (whom we already call "Q") - and I really do believe that it will be possible for my fiance and I to maintain somewhat of a simple lifestyle. Am I living in a dream world? As of now, we buy only what we need in terms of food, consumer products and clothing - so why should having a baby change all that?

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Well, there's a laugh! It just does, doesn't it? And those of you who are already parents probably know exactly what I mean. I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments about raising a "minimalist" baby. I think it's completely possible, but I want to hear feedback from the clutter-ridden to the absolutely minimalistic. Although we are not total minimalists, we thrive on having a simple household - I truly believe there is a happy medium in which we buy and keep things that we love, use or need. And that's it. If anything doesn't fit into one of those three categories, it goes to charity, the recycle bin or - as a last resort - the garbage.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Here are 10 useful tips (I've found) on preparing for your first newborn:

1. Wait until after the baby shower to buy. So far, we've had a baby shower and we received many items that we will definitely use (products and such). My suggestion is to not buy anything such as baby shampoos, soaps, wipes and diapers until after your baby shower. People will most likely buy these things for you. You will also receive gift cards, and these will come in handy to buy the things you still need after the shower is over.

2. Definitely have a baby shower for your first baby. Even if you only invite a few people, a baby shower is a time not only to receive special gifts and wishes from people you care about, it's a time to celebrate the new family member that will soon enter your lives.

3. Keep your baby shower simple. Forget center pieces. Forget renting a hall or restaurant space. Invite people that are closest to you. Have it in your home if at all possible. Order catering (so you don't have to cook/prepare food). Obtain the help of a friend or parent to help you clean the day before. Enlist another friend to help with handwritten or computer generated invitations and keeping things organized on shower day. People understand that you are close to giving birth, and they will not expect you to be the hostess of the year for your shower. Sometimes it's easy to forget how sympathetic others are - there is no need to pull off the "perfect" shower - just have fun, open gifts and enjoy your guests.

4. Do not feel like you have to use the "must-have" newborn checklists on mega baby store websites. These lists are designed to get you to buy as much stuff as possible. From the layette to toys to bottles to strollers, it can all be very overwhelming. The best things I did to see what I absolutely needed was to 1.) ask friends that already have babies what they absolutely needed and what they could do without and 2.) read the book Baby Bargains - it answers so many questions for first time parents and tells you what you absolutely need and what you do not. You can get it used or new from Amazon.com, or borrow a copy from a friend. Even if you don't have the newest version, you'll still benefit from reading it.

5. Get creative and stay simple when decorating your baby's nursery. Why must we paint the baby's nursery pale pink or blue and buy all the fancy "trimmings" like quilts that can't even be used in the crib anyway? Let me be the one to tell you ... the baby does not care what his or her nursery looks like. He will not remember. Do you remember your baby nursery? Buy or use furniture that will grow with the child instead of baby-looking furniture like white or pale wood. I think it's important for a child to love his own space once he's old enough to appreciate and remember it - it's something you can do together once he's old enough. But, as for an infant, do what doesn't require 1.) a lot of work, 2.) a lot of paint, and 3.) a lot of "fuss" (too many stuffed animals, blankets, toys, etc.) Simplicity starts from the very beginning, and if you want to instill that mindset into your child, you must start from day one so things don't start accumulating.

6. Breastfeed if you can. This eliminates the need for extra bottles, nipples, formula, bottle warmers (which don't work well anyway and aren't recommended even for formula) and burp rags (your baby will spit up less with breast milk). Breastfeeding is the best possible food for your baby - not only that, but it's also the simplest! You can go anywhere and always have food "on hand" (or "on breast" ... however you want to look at it!) Don't give up early if you feel you just can't do it ... keep trying, and your baby will thank you in more ways than one.

7. Don't feel bad buying second-hand clothing or accepting hand-me-downs from friends and family. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using second hand clothes for babies. Think about it - babies outgrow their clothes about every three months until they are in school. Why would we buy all new clothes everytime they have a growing spurt? The great thing about this is, used clothes clean up like new with some fragrance free detergent and fabric softener. No one will ever know but you ... and maybe your "baby" when he becomes a teenager!

8. Buy or use products that "transition" into something else. Some examples of this include: cribs that transition into toddler and then full-size beds, carseats that can be used as carriers and also insert into your stroller, carseats that transition into bigger carseats (so you don't have to keep buying new ones), pack 'n plays that can be used as a bassinet, changing table and playpen. These products will last longer and transition with your baby as he grows older.

9. Create your own list of baby needs and wants. Start from scratch with a list of things you think you may need or want with a new baby, and then think of places or people that you can get these things from without buying them (or getting them dirt cheap ... ebay is a great start!) Stick to your guns when people try to tell you you need something when you clearly know you don't. Chances are, you won't. You definitely need the basics when taking care of a baby, but the "frills" are for the parents' sake only - not the baby's - you just don't need all that extra stuff. Truly think about what will make your life easier for you and your child during those first few months, and that's it.

10. Simplify your own home. This entire website is about simplifying your life. If you haven't taken action to simplify your own life before this new life comes into your life, now is as good a time as any. You may have that nesting instinct kicking in, so take advantage of it, and perhaps enlist the help of a spouse or friend to go through your home (little by little) getting rid of things that no longer serve your new life. I promise you, once you get on this "kick", it will carry over into your life as a new parent, and you'll want to keep things simple even with your new little one.

I hope this list helps you get started and takes away some of the overwhelming feelings that come along with being a first time parent. You really don't need all the stuff that stores and even well-meaning friends and family press upon you. Be who you are, stick to what you believe and continue your minimalist-like lifestyle, even with a new baby in the mix.

Treatment of Flea Bites on Human - What Home Remedies Available?

Fleas not only bite and live off your pets, they bite people too. The typical human reaction to a flea bite is the formation of a small, hard, red, slightly raised, itching spot with no swelling. Some bleeding can occur, particularly if the bitten area is scratched. A single puncture point caused by the flea is generally apparent in the center of each spot.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Flea bites normally occur on the legs and ankles. Different people have different reaction to fleabites. Some people are totally unattractive to fleas and are not affected by the presence of fleas while others may be "appealing" and sensitive to fleas resulting in severe allergic reaction to their bites.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

See some pictures of flea bites on humans

Well, how to treat flea bites on human? Before you run off to your family doctor to seek medical treatment, here are some home remedies for the treatment of flea bites on human.

1. Firstly, it's important to keep the affected area clean. Wash the bites with some antiseptic lotion or soap. Use cold water but avoid the use of warm or hot water as this may tend to stimulate itch

2. Secondly, apply a cold pack over the bites to reduce swelling.

3. Do not scratch the inflamed area as this may lead to open wounds and secondary infections.

4. If the affected area is read and swollen, you may apply a mild steroid cream like 1% hydrocortisone cream. This should be easily available from any pharmacy without the need of a prescription. Hydrocortisone helps in reducing inflammation rapidly. Alternatively, if you have a bottle of calamine lotion at home, this may help too.

5. Very often, the itch caused by the fleabites can be very intense. An oral dose of anti-histamine like Dimetapp, Chlortrimeton is very effective in relieving itch. Once the itch stops, you will stop scratching as well and the healing will take place faster.

Treatment of flea bites using these home remedies should improves within a few days, However, if the condition worsen whereby, they remained red and swollen with discharges, then a trip to your family doctor may be necessary. Your doctor may prescribe a course of antibiotics for you and a jab of steroid may be needed to stop the inflammation.

However, success in treating flea bites is by no means a solution to your problem. To avoid further bites from these little pesky creatures, the only solution is to get rid of them totally. Killing fleas in house, getting rid of fleas on pets is what you need to do as part of your flea extermination plan

Mattress Ratings - Comparison of Best Types of Beds

If you are looking for mattress ratings, you've come to the right place.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

My research team has conducted extensive mattress research, and this article will share with you the information gathered from over 3,000 mattress owners.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

This article will specifically provide ratings of different mattress types, including latex, memory foam, airbeds, waterbeds and innerspring.

Latex mattresses

According to our research, latex mattresses had the highest satisfaction rating. Specifically, about 92% of latex mattress owners found their bed to be comfortable. Latex mattresses scored well because they tend to have fewer downsides than other mattress types.

Memory foam mattresses

After latex beds, memory foam came in second. About 85% of memory foam mattress owners found their beds comfortable. Memory foam has downsides, but overall most people seem to like it.

Airbeds

Airbeds came in third with about 83% of owners finding them comfortable. A big advantage of airbeds is that they allow for adjustable firmness by increasing or decreasing air in the mattress. Also, each side of an airbed can often be adjusted to provide differing firmness levels.

Waterbeds

Waterbeds came in fourth place. About 82% of waterbed owners said that the beds were comfortable. The beds have made technological strides over the years and are fairly similar to conventional beds now.

Innerspring mattresses

Innerspring mattresses as a group scored well behind the others. Only about 55% of innerspring bed owners said that their mattress is comfortable. The main reason for dissatisfaction is that the beds tend to sag sooner and more often than the other mattress types.

A Few Tips to Remember About Dog Bathing..

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

Puppy Bathing - use a shampoo that is specially formulated for puppies. Start at an early age to get your dog used to being brushed and bathed. Always rinse thoroughly after washing. Shampoo residue can be very irritating to your pet's skin. Do not use human shampoos on your pet, they are too harsh and have a different PH level. Fatty acid supplements added to your dog's good diet will help maintain a healthy coat and skin. While some dogs enjoy the attention when having their bath others do not. If your dog is afraid of water and bath time is a battle, try one of the dry shampoos. There are many options for shampoos, choose one that is right for your dog. Wear old clothes, you will get wet. Be careful not to let fur go down your drain, use a simple drain screen to protect your plumbing from hair clogs.

Dog Bathing - How often Should You Bath Your Dog?

How often your pet will need a bath will depend on what type of activities your dog is involved in, wash your dog when it is needed. If the proper shampoo is used it will not harm your dog's coat or skin to wash him on a regular basis.
Here are some guide lines:

When he has rolled in something nasty dog bathing is necessary; which is pretty obvious, just use your nose, that tell tale doggy smell will let you know it's time for a bath. Use an antibacterial or deodorizing shampoo and follow up with a conditioner. If your best buddy has had a confrontation with a skunk, there are special shampoos for this type of odor. Simple doggy odor - use one of the many tearless dog shampoos on the market. **Note** If the smell is more than a doggy odor, it could be a sign of a skin disease, a problem with the ears, mouth or anal glands. Check with your veterinarian. Dandruff - check with your vet or groomer to determine the cause and use the appropriate shampoo. Allergies - a dog with itchy skin from allergies may find a bath soothing and help reduce itching. The use of a soothing oatmeal shampoo, a gentle hypo-allergenic or hydrocortisone-based shampoo in most cases should be helpful. Fleas, tics, mites, or lice - shampooing is one of the best ways to get rid of external parasites and there are many appropriate shampoos that will fight fleas and ticks on your canine friend that have proper pH balance while cleaning and conditioning your dog's coat.

Preparing for the Bath

Brushing and removing mats should always be done before starting the dog bathing. This will also improve the effectiveness of the shampoo. (It is also important to brush your dog each day to keep his coat clean, shiny and healthy.) Have a container to keep shampoos, conditioners and after bath supplies such as grooming mists, absorbent towels and a hair dryer. Apply a protective ointment to your dog's eyes to shield against shampoo irritation. Pack cotton balls into your friend's ears to prevent excess water from entering the canal while rinsing. Raised Dog Bath - this is ideal for you and your dog. Restraints - for a quick and hassle free bath time. This will also lessen the chance of injury to you as well as your pet and attempts to escape. Some pet tubs come with restraints included. At the very least you will need a plastic pitcher for wetting and rinsing. Also available are sprayers, sprayers with integrated shampoo cartridges, some bath tubs come with sprayers, doggy spas, doggy showers, there is an endless supply of convenience products. Use a rubber non-slip mat to keep your dog in place.

Now you are Ready for Dog Bathing

To wash your dog's face, saturate a towel with water and shampoo and wipe his face, being careful not to get shampoo in his eyes. Wet your dog well from neck to tail. Begin by massaging the shampoo all the way down to the skin. Work from head total. Rinse thoroughly, a sprayer is best for this. Any residue of shampoo remaining on the dog can cause itching, flaking, and skin problems. Keep the restraint attached as you towel dry your dog, then finish with a pet dryer at a cool setting. Brush your pet again. A great way to enhance your dog's beautiful coat, moisturize his skin, and release tangles and mats is with a grooming mist. Other grooming tasks should be done at this time, such as clean your buddies teeth and ears and trim his nails. You may want to consider a grooming table. It is at a level that makes it so much more efficient and easy to work on your dog. Many owners prefer this back saving option. Don't forget to reward your dog's good behavior with treats and plenty of love.

That is it, your dog bathing is done!

Growing Your Seedlings

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

OK, you've got your best seeds selected and you're ready to start planting. What comes next?

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

What To Grow Them In?

I'll state up front that I don't know anything about hydroponics, nor do I know anyone growing chillies using that technique. As a result it will not be covered here.
Now that we've got that out of the way, there are two main points to be covered under this topic and they are; the medium to plant the seeds in and the container to hold the medium.
With regard to the medium I absolutely recommend using a premium potting mix or seed raising mix.

This is because these products are specifically designed with the following features; large particles to avoid compacting of the media which in turn inhibits both root penetration and drainage and, a nutrient profile that promotes vigorous root expansion and foliage growth.

You will inevitably come across people that tell you that the seedling needs to start off in the soil that it will eventually grow. That's absolute rubbish, and if it was true would mean that there is no plant nursery industry as no one would buy anything in pots to take home. The fact is that the nursery industry across Australia turns over several billion dollars a year. Your garden soil is suitable for chillies that are well on the way to growing up, but is normally of a density, or contains diseases, that can inhibit root growth, damage, or even kill your new seedlings.

Now, as to containers, there is an enormous range and what is best for you is going to depend a little bit on how many plants you intend to grow and a whole lot on personal choice. Containers range from the individual Jiffy pots or blocks through the plastic 6 cells to large clay or plastic pots. We'll examine each of these in more detail.

Jiffy pots and blocks are made from compressed sphagnum peat moss and wood pulp and uncompress and swell up once they are immersed in water. The seed can then be pressed into this swollen mass and, if kept moist, will germinate into a perfectly acceptable medium.

A big advantage of these is that when the seedlings are hardy enough to be planted outside, you simply plant the pot into the garden soil. There's no need top remove the seedling from one medium to the other thereby reducing the stress on the young plant. The downside is that at around AUD.20 each, if your going to be planting a lot of seeds, the cost will start to add up, and, of course, they are not re-useable.

Now, the plastic six-pack cells are another option. You simply fill them with your seed propagation or potting mix, moisten, and put your seeds in each one using a dibble stick. Alternatively, three-quarter fill them then put a seed on top of each one and then put more mix to fill the cells. Either way is fine. The advantages of these are that they are cheap and re-useable which helps keep your costs down.
On the downside however, because they are small it is likely that you will need to transplant the seedlings into a larger pot before they are ready to go outside. The reason they need to be transferred is that the seedlings will rapidly become root-bound in the small cells and if they do, this affects the later performance and heath of the plant. It also stresses the seedling twice going from cell to pot to garden. If you are able to plant from cell to garden (as you may in the tropics) or if the plant is going to stay in the pot it gets transferred to, then these negative factors are not an issue for you. Congrats.
Now I'll quickly look at pots.

I'm not going to explore cost here as it obviously depends on your personal choice and there is an enormous range available. If you are intending to plant into cheap plastic pots and then transfer to the garden at a suitable age that's a perfectly acceptable process. The only downside here is that if you live in the colder parts of the country, you will not be able to fit many pots on a heating mat as discussed below. However if you are able to keep the pots warm some other way (e.g. heated greenhouse, or keep them inside the house) then this is not an issue for you.

If you plant the seeds directly into the pot that you intend to grow them in that's fine too - the negative issues are only those discussed in the previous two sentences. On the plus side, the seedling does not experience any of the stress of transplanting.

Finally, just for your information I'll quickly go over the basics of what the commercial nurseries do. They use a more involved process where the seeds are germinated in large flat trays with no medium other than some water. After a couple of days, the delicate seedlings are transplanted into the six-pack cells that you are familiar with. This maximizes the usage and saleability of the six-packs as there are no empty cells as a result of seeds not germinating. You've all seen the six-packs at the nursery where one of the seedlings has died and they just do not sell. So for the nursery to be able to avoid non-germination is worth the hassle.

Where Do I Grow Them?

You've got your seeds, raising mix and your pots. So, we now need to discuss where you intend to grow and subsequently acclimatise your seedlings.
I will quickly cover what I do first and then go over a number of possibilities for you to be able to choose the approach that best suits you.

When I do grow from seeds, which is not that often these days, I start off using a simple mini-greenhouse (see picture), with a premium grade potting mix, to germinate the seeds in, making sure it's kept moist. This sits outside during the day where it will get sufficient sunlight and comes in at night to avoid temperatures dropping to detrimental levels.
As the seedlings begin to touch the top of the clear plastic lid (about 5cm high)

I transfer them to larger pots and place the outdoors against a galvanised iron shed, facing north. In this location they get plenty of spring sunlight and warmth, which is also reflected back onto the plants by the shed. Very occasionally Perth will experience a cold night or two during this time in which case I will either move the plants inside for the night or to a sheltered area where the temperature drop will not be as extreme.

Once I am happy that the plants are acclimatised and ready to go out on their own, I transfer then to the raised garden beds up at the back of my yard. The time frame for this varies and is as much about the future likelihood of damaging cold spells as it is about the readiness of the plant. This is usually around 3-6 weeks.

I need to say here that I avoid planting seeds too early (i.e. before October) which negates my need for a glasshouse or coldframe as discussed below. I can do this because Perth has a long, warm Autumn which means I still get a extended harvest season that lasts well into April and frequently even May.

If you live north of Latitude 35 S there is a good chance you can grow your chillies all year round, particularly on near the coast. If you live more than 200km from the coast you will need to be careful of low temperatures during the winter/dry season.

If you live between Latitude 30 S and Latitude 35 S (approximately Perth, Durban, and Santiago) you can adopt my technique above, or start a little earlier and borrow from the advice below, which is for the colder regions.

Should you live south of Latitude 30 S then you will need to read the information below and should look at getting your seeds to germinate in July/August to ensure you get a long enough harvest season to make the effort worthwhile.

OK. First thing to consider is that you will most likely need some form of heating to provide the temperatures your seeds need to germinate. There are several options here that I will discuss.
First option is an electric heat mat which come in both pre-set and adjustable temperature models. You'll pay AUD-60 for the former and about three times that for the adjustable models. In Australia you can get these at good nurseries and garden centres. The Bunnings store (in North America the equivalent would be Walmart) near me does not stock them however, you are also able to buy them online at retailers such as http://www.gardenexpress.com.au (please note that we have no association with gardenexpress.com.au and if you look around there are other websites with the same equipment).
Friends that have these mats thoroughly recommend them. They have asked me to remind you though that once the seeds have germinated the heating mat needs to be placed somewhere that the seedlings will receive sunlight.

Another option is one that is quite popular with keen gardeners and that is the coldframe. The are an endless number of variations on the above example and they all work on the principle of solar heating of the medium in which you are germinating your seeds. Depending on how cold the climate is you may choose to open the up during the day and close them at night to retain the heat, or simply leave them closed most of the time to provide maximum warmth.

If your climate is extremely cold there are further steps you can take to heat the contents of your cold frame. One is to dig below the base of the frame and pack this with moist manure and straw and then cover this with a layer of loam and then place your potting mix/raising mix/cells/pots on top of this. Extra heat will then be provided by the decomposition of the underlying manure and you may be surprised by just how much heat this generates. I recommend you keep a thermometer in the frame to make sure temperatures do not get too much above 35oC. Cooling can be achieved by opening the sashes, of course.

In extremely cold climates you may wish to heat your coldframe electrically with a setup involving heating cables embedded below the base of the coldframe. I do recommend you get a qualified electrician to set this up as the consequences of a faulty DIY job could be fatal (and I'd hate to lose a subscriber!). Once a coldframe is modified in this way it is commonly called a hotbox.

The third and final option I'll cover quickly is for those lucky enough to have a greenhouse. There is not a lot more to say regarding these that has not been covered in the previous three paragraphs. They are solar heated and this can be augmented electrically or by having some compost breaking down either under the floor or simply in a tub in one corner. There are a couple of points to be make sure of with regard to a greenhouse and they are; that the greenhouse is in a position to get sufficient sunlight through the winter months and, that it does not get too hot in the warmer months. Many greenhouses have panels that open to all the latter issue to be addressed.

Lets Grow Them

This is it. Everything is ready now to plant your seeds. The best time to do this is approximately two months before you believe you will able to put your chilli plants outside to fend for themselves, i.e. after they are acclimatised.

Fill up your six-pack cells or pots with your preferred seed raising medium, remembering not to pack the medium down as this will inhibit root growth. If you are using a premium potting mix this will already have sufficient nutrients to support the initial growth of the seedling. However, if you are using any other medium there is a high probability that it does not have the nutrient profile to support your young seedlings.

So you will need to apply a liquid fertilizer, of your choice, diluted for seedlings as the directions on the packet instruct. For those of you in Australia I use Powerfeed (TM) by the group that make Seasol (TM) (I have no association with them whatsoever, though if they want to cut a deal I am open to that).

I use a hand operated spray bottle to apply the fertilizer however some people prefer to soak the filled containers in the liquid for a few minutes. It's up to you really.
Either way the germinating medium may compact a little here because of the liquid and this is not a problem however, if you need to top up the medium in some containers, do so.

Now with the blunt end of a pencil, or something of that size, push a hole into the medium in each cell, approximately ½ cm deep. Drop 2 or 3 seeds into each hole and then push a little of the germinating medium over them to cover. Depending on how many varieties you are planting you may want to label the cells or pots in some way so that you don't need to try and remember which is which. If you keep a garden journal or almanac then you will no doubt be recording a number of data items regarding the planting. It is a good habit to have as the information you pick up over time can be significant for growing chillies in your particular area.

Now ensure that you keep the seeds moist and warm. Moist does not mean soggy, it means moist. Eventually you will see the seeds beginning to sprout. Let them grow for a week, keeping moist and warm and then, with a pair of scissors, cull all but the strongest seedling in each cell by cutting them off at the base. You want to do this to ensure that each generation of your chilli seeds is stronger and hardier than the last.

Ensure that wherever you have the seedlings growing gets sufficient light, heat and ventilation to ensure healthy growth. Fertilise your seedlings as per the directions on the packet/bottle - this is usually once a week.

It is incredibly important that you do not let the seedlings dry out. Seedlings that get stressed by dehydration early in their life seldom fully recover - you will end up with plants that have significantly decreased vigour and disease resistance.

Any electrical heating that you may be using can be turned off after about the third week provided the seedlings will not be exposed to the risk of frost.

After around six weeks your chilli plants should be of good size and looking healthy, and ready for planting.

Acclimatising and Transplanting Your Seedlings

If you have ever had an aquarium you will know that if you purchase new fish from the store and take them home you do not simply tip them from the bag into you tank and assume that everything will be alright. The temperature shock and the pH shock would compound the stress of travel and most likely result in dead fish with in 24 hours.

Your seedlings are the same. They are accustomed to the warm, lightly ventilated, constantly watered nirvana that you have raised them in. Basically they are complete wimps and need to be toughened up before they can be transplanted out into the big bad world.

In more technical terms they have grown rapidly, producing large cells with thin walls due to a lack of stress and environmental demand affecting the plant. They need to become accustomed to day-long exposure to UV light, strong winds, heavy rain, larger temperature variations and sporadic dry conditions.

Many gardeners call this process of toughening, or acclimatising, hardening off.

Acclimatising

This is a process that takes place over two weeks once your seedlings reach an age of about six weeks.
The first step is to slow down the growth of your plant by watering and feeding less, and if possible, keeping the seedlings at a slightly cooler temperature. This will begin the adjustment stage by preserving the plants' energy for adjusting to the new outdoor conditions.

Begin acclimatising your seedlings to the garden by gradually exposing them to outdoor
conditions. First expose them to filtered sun in the shade of a tree or in a sheltered spot protected from the wind and direct sun.Leave them for 3-4 hours and gradually increase the time spent outside by 1-2 hours per day until, bringing them back into shelter at night.

After a week or so, they should be able to withstand a full day of sun. While acclimatising the seedlings, watch them closely for signs of stress (the leaves may start turning yellow and drying out if exposed to too much sun). They should now also be able to stay out at night providing the temperature is not going to drop much below 10oC (50oF).

The science behind the process of acclimatizing your plants is a physiological one that adds carbohydrate reserves to the plant and produces additional cuticle on the leaves, reducing water loss. Practically, the process slows plant growth while acclimating the seedling to harsher conditions.

Transplanting

You're seedlings are now ready to transplant and if you bought your seedlings from a nursery then this is the place for you to begin reading this document.

Before I get into the process of putting your plants in the ground I'd like to go over a couple of points about seedlings purchased from a nursery. The first is that these are frequently root-bound and if so, it will take longer for them to extend their roots into the garden soil, so they too are subject to wilting until they are established. Tease the roots our a little, being careful not to damage them, otherwise they will continue to circle around rather than spread out. Also, give them a little extra attention once they're in the ground

The next point is that most nurseries indicate that their seedlings are acclimatised and ready for immediate transplanting. Instead of gambling and being disappointed (it was your money after all), harden them off yourself for at least a week first.

One more point to consider that, as a general rule of thumb, planting the same type of plant in the same spot year after year is asking for problems. The reason of this is that pests, because like their solanum cousins, tomatoes and eggplants, chillies are prone to root knot nematode. These are microscopic roundworms which attack the roots of the plant and cause it to wilt.

The two best practices for minimising this risk is to practice crop rotation or by adding significant amounts of organic matter to the soil at least annually.

The spacing between your plants depends on a number of factors, including the size of the varieties being grown. Smaller varieties, such as ornamentals, can be planted closer together and the there's usually less sunburn (light brown burnt areas) of the fruit because they're better shaded by the leaves. Some commercial chilli growers space their plants as closely as 10-15cm apart. Close spacing also helps minimize evaporation due to the thick canopy of leaves.

Now, to planting - generously water the plants to be transplanted the day before . This insures that the whole plant will be hydrated, leaves and all, when it's time to transplant, thereby helping it to cope with stress.

Plan to do your transplanting when it is overcast or during the cooler evening hours.
Water the plant immediately before digging or removing from its pot. Soak the root ball so that the soil will adhere to the roots, when it is dug from the garden.

Never leave the roots exposed to sun, heat or wind. This is a risk if you remove all plants from their pots and simply lay them down, planting one after the other. It's much better to remove them from the pots/cells just prior to planting.

Water the hole before you place the transplant into it. Place the transplant into the hole and fill it halfway with water. Allow the water to settle the soil around the roots and then finish filling the hole.
Lightly firm the soil around the transplant and again, water the whole plant, leaves and all. If possible, shield the new transplant from direct sunlight for 1-2 weeks, by cutting the bottom out of an old plastic pot roughly the same height as the seedling and place this over it. This will help the plant get over the shock by cutting down the direct light and also reducing evaporation. An extra plus is that it protects the plant from getting snapped off in strong winds.

Check the plant daily for the first couple of weeks. Transplants will need watering every day, if not more. If it is wilting, water the plant. Depending on the weather and the plant, you may need to water twice a day until it becomes established. The larger the plant and/or the less roots to top growth ratio, the more water will be needed.

All of this may seem extreme, but the shock of being uprooted is stressful to plants anytime of year. In the heat of summer, this extra precaution can make the difference between keeping and losing your transplants.

That's it for this section. The third and final section deals with Problems, Pests and Diseases

Growing Organic Muskmelons And Cantaloupes

Muskmelons / Cantaloupes / Spanspeks / rock melons

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

If this article on growing cantaloupes was written in Australia, we'd call them "rock melons." Or in South Africa, we'd be writing about "spanspeks." Here in the U.S. we call them either muskmelons or cantaloupes. You're better to live in a warmer climate for growing cantaloupes, but you can successfully grow some varieties in cooler climates like where we live in NE Washington. If you want to make some good money growing muskmelons, grow and sell them in Japan. As of September 2010 they were selling for over USD at food markets in Japan. Muskmelons are members of the cucumber family, as are squash and watermelon, and therefore are very similar in growth patterns and nutritional requirements, especially with watermelon.

Graco Pack N Play Mattress

When to Plant Muskmelons/Cantaloupes

Muskmelons or cantaloupes? These terms will be interchangeably used throughout this article. Short-season cantaloupes ripen in approximately 65 to 75 days, whereas the average cantaloupe ripens in about 85 days. Short season types ripen between 65 and 75 days. Full season types ripen around 85 days. STOP Whether you're planting seeds directly to your garden or transplanting your melon plants, never plant in soil temps below 60°F. In Northern climates, you'll need to start your plants about 4 weeks ahead of your target transplant date. In Southern climates, you can direct seed once danger of frost is past and your soil temps are at least 60°F. If you live in a cooler climate, you may have no choice but to start the seeds ahead of time in small pots.

Where to Plant Cantaloupes/Muskmelons

Protecting these melon plants and protecting them from cold temperatures will produce better results. The more warmth your vines get, the more fruit your plants will produce in at harvest time. Muskmelons require full sun and plenty of heat. Give them the sunniest spot in your garden with good air circulation. You want your melon plants to dry out quickly after a rain to prevent diseases.

Cantaloupes like it hot and thrive best at temps of 70 to 95°F. They like well-draining soil that has a good amount of humus (rotted matter like manure, compost, leaves, etc.)

Preparing the Soil

Cantaloupe and Muskmelons require a pH level no lower than 6.0 up to about 7.5. These melons need a good amount of calcium in the soil to prevent blossom-end rot. Melons prefer soils with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8, which indicates adequate calcium availability-an important guard against blossom-end rot. While melons need the big three nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (potash), or N-P-K, they have less need for nitrogen than many fruits and vegetables. If you have not-as-good draining soil, you can improve your drainage by creating 6 to 8 inch raised beds.

Rototill or spade 2 to 4 inches of finished compost and/or well-composted manure 6 to 8 inches deep into your rows before planting your melons. If you don't have enough compost to cover your rows deeply with, use concentrated amounts where your plants will be located. This pre-composting of your soil provides the needed nutrients for your melons, distributes moisture evenly, and helps their roots get sufficient oxygen.

Choosing the right Seed Varieties for your Area

It's a good practice, before ordering seeds, to find out from your county extension what seed varieties area resistant to fusarium wilt or other diseases common to cantaloupes/muskmelons.

Germinating Muskmelon/Cantaloupe Seeds

Melon seeds are typically usable for up to 4 years after you've purchased them initially, provided you've stored them in a cool, dry, and dark location. You'll need a soil temperature to be a minimum of 60° to 100°F, although the accepted optimal temperature would be at 85° to 90°F. Seedling should emerge at around 3 to 5 days if the soil is at 90°F, and at about 10 to 12 days if your soil temp is 70°F. Don't allow your soil temps to drop below 60°F or your seeds will simply rot.

planting muskmelons/cantaloupes Indoors

It is recommended for planting seeds indoors to use a sterile potting soil so as to allow your seedlings the best chance at germination and survival. Plant your seeds in tapered plastic pots, soil blocks, or plastic trays for easy transplanting. While some gardening sites recommend using peat pots, we aren't crazy about them...they do not decompose as quickly as we like, so we're recommending soil blocks for those who prefer to not use plastic containers. Cantaloupe seeds need light to germinate, so plant your seeds ¼" to ½" deep so that they'll get some light.

We plant 2 or 3 seeds per pot, and if all three come up, we select the biggest one after the plants have at least 2 true leaves - around 2 inches tall - and snip the others off at soil level.

Transplanting your seedlings to your garden

As with most fruits and veggies, we strongly recommend that you "harden off" your muskmelon seedlings. This entails moving them out of doors during the daylight hours - into the evenings later in the process - for 7 to 10 days, as well as reducing their water gradually as well. Don't fertilize the seedlings during the hardening off process, and make sure that they are protected if the weather becomes very windy and/or rainy. Your seedlings will be around 3 to 4 weeks old when you transplant them. They'll have at least two true leaves and be at least 2 inches tall. Minimum air temps should be around 70° to 75°F during the daytime and 60° to 65°F in the night time.

If you live in a Northern climate, we strongly advise using a black plastic "mulch" to warm up the soil before planting. When you transplant your muskmelons, make sure you handle them carefully; don't disturb the roots. Transplant to your garden early in the day, or in the evening to avoid stressing them. If you're planting to rows, space your plants 2 to 4 feet apart, and make the rows 4 to 6 feet apart. If you're planting hills, 4 ft apart should be fine, but check your seed packets for recommendations as some varieties sprawl more than others. Set your plants just a little deeper than they were in the pots so that there's a bit of an indentation at the base of your seedlings.

Water your seedlings thoroughly - but don't drown them!

Use row covers to protect them for the first few days from the sun and pests. You can leave them on until the plants flower if you need to protect them from various pests

(discussed below).

Planting Seeds Directly in Your Garden

In Southern climates, you have the advantage of skipping the previous sections and planting your seeds into the garden. Make sure your soil is a minimum of 60°F. If you need to aid the soil temperatures in getting to that level, it's a good practice to use black plastic to bring your temps up. If planting in rows, we typically space our plants about 2 feet apart and our rows 4 feet apart. It is a good idea, though, to plant seeds every 4 to 6 inches and thin your plants once they're a couple inches tall. If you're planting hills, space them at least 4 feet apart, on center, and plant 5 or 6 seeds on each hill, later thinning them to 2 or 3 of the best seedlings. Outdoors you can plant your seeds from ½ to ¾ inch in the soil as the sun will penetrate deeper than grow lights if you plant your seeds indoors. Lightly pack your soil around the muskmelon seeds; don't pack the soil so tight it forms a crust.

Row covers may be beneficial early in the season to keep your plants warmer and keep bugs out. Make sure you remove them by the time your plants flower, though, or the bees won't be able to pollinate your muskmelons. If your soil doesn't drain well, it's a good idea to mound your soil either in hills or rows. In our area, because our soil is so rocky, we don't need to raise our beds and the cantaloupes do just fine.

Make sure you know the variety of seed your using as some plants will sprawl further than others, so your plants and rows may need to be spaced wider than what we do.

Growing muskmelons/cantaloupes successfully until harvest time

If you've planted seeds in hills, thin the seedlings to the strongest two or three plants once they've reached 2 to 3 inches in height. If you've planted in rows - we usually prefer rows, but either way works well - thin your plants to about 1 every 24 inches. Cantaloupe needs bees for pollination. If your area is light on bees, look on Craigslist or in the classified papers to see if there are any beekeepers willing to place hives on your property. Make sure you don't use pesticides - they'll wipe out the bees. Also, as this is about growing cantaloupe organically, we'll give you other suggestions below for dealing with bad bugs.

You can trellis cantaloupe if you have a very small garden, but you may need to support your fruits with a "fruit sling" (we use old nylons). If you've properly prepared your soil using plenty of compost/composted manure, you shouldn't really need to add fertilizer during the season, but you can side-dress with composted manure mid-season if your plants need more nutrients.

Mulching & Weeding

We've already discussed black plastic as a mulch when growing cantaloupes. It helps warm the soil and it suppresses weeds. However, you will need to use drip irrigation with black plastic as overhead watering simply won't work. It's best to lay out your drip lines before laying down the plastic, then make sure you lay the plastic down in the heat of the day and stretch it as tight as you can over the rows. Organic mulches like woodchips or straw can also be used when growing cantaloupes, but don't apply organic mulches until soils are warmer than 75°F. Applying organic mulches too early keeps the soil cool, resulting in slow growth and shallow rooting. If you're not mulching and have to use manual weed control methods, be careful to not pull weeds around the base of your growing muskmelons or you may harm the shallow roots.

We cut off the weeds close to the plants with scissors to allow the cantaloupe plants to gain the upper hand over weeds without harming the plants. Early in the season, I find it's easy to control the bulk of the weeds by rototilling between the rows, and later in the season you can just pull the large weeds that'll poke up between the vines.

Watering muskmelons/cantaloupes

After planting, make sure you soak your seed area well, but don't drown the seeds or seedlings. While drip irrigation is desirable, not everyone can afford it. If you have to use overhead watering like we do, make sure you do it early in the day so the plants dry out completely by noon. We haven't tried it, but we've heard that furrow irrigation is also very effective.

Watering early or using drip systems will help prevent foliage diseases that are quite common in cucurbit (squash) family plants. As it gets late in the season, and the growing muskmelons are about the size of baseballs, decrease watering; this helps the fruits to mature and prevents the fruit from splitting. Companion Planting and Rotation Considerations

Good companions for growing cantaloupes include:

Beans which supplement your garden with nitrogen that it absorbs from the air. Radishes are reputed to protect your muskmelons from squash borers, carrot flies, cucumber beetles, and leaf miners - these pests like radish leaves best, but don't really harm radish plants. Mint is said to help control ants, aphids, flea beetles, and rodents. Onions ward off fruit tree borers, weevils, aphids, rust flies, moles, and some root nematodes. Marigolds and Nasturtiums repel bugs and beetles away from your muskmelons. They also attract bees which help to pollinate your squash flowers. Oregano is also said to benefit squash in keeping away many pests.

Corn is a great companion for squash family plants including muskmelons/cantaloupes. Corn produces lots of pollen and attracts beneficial pollinating insects. Corn also provides shade to the melons in the afternoon heat, and the melon vines and leaves lessen weeds and preserve soil moisture. A bad companion for melons are potatoes. Potatoes inhibit the growth in melon plants. You don't necessarily need to rotate melons annually unless you're having issues with verticillium wilt, fusarium rot, or mosaic virus. Because summer and winter squash, cucumbers, and melons are of the same family, though, it's a best practice to rotate your plants out of an area next year.

When to Harvest

Cantaloupes/Muskmelons separate from the vine when ripened, unlike watermelons and other cucurbits. If you note that your melons have changed to a yellowish or tannish color from their normal greenish color, and that the skin has gotten rougher and duller in appearance, your melons are close to ripe. When the base of the stem appears to be cracked, lift the melon up and if the vine separates easily, the melon is ripe. The underside will also usually have a pale yellow appearance. If your weather is hot, harvest the melons daily; if temperate, every other day should be fine. Take care when harvesting not to damage the cantaloupe vines.

Saving cantaloupe/muskmelon Seeds

Once your melons are fully mature and separate from the vine on their own, the seeds will be ready to harvest. Note that you cannot save seeds from hybrid varieties - not to be confused with GMO seeds. These seeds are cross-pollinated with other varieties to create disease resistance but cannot be used for any further cropping.

So, if you're growing what is now termed a "heritage" seed, you're good to go. Just scrape the seeds out of the muskmelon, wash them in a bowl of warm water, and scoop the clean seeds onto a dry towel and let them sit in a warm, dry area for about 3 days.

Store the seeds in a cool, dry place for next years garden. Placing the seeds in a zip lock-style plastic bag and freezing is a great way to preserve these seeds as well.

Melon Storage

We've had very good results placing our harvested cantaloupes in the fridge for up to 2 weeks at about 40° to 45°F. You can freeze cantaloupe after scraping the seeds, removing the skin, and cubing it. I like it fresh though so I don't do this myself.

Preventative and Natural Solutions to Common Pests

Aphids are also common pests that can be found on the undersides of your muskmelon leaves. You'll know they're there if you see leaves turning yellow and crinkling or curling. Aphids suck the juice from your plant leaves and leave a sticky substance behind. The only beneficiary of this process is ants, who harvest the sticky sweet stuff. The best solution to aphids is to import ladybugs to your garden. They feed on aphids and are very effective in ridding your plants of these little green, gray, or brown bugs. Another solution is to "wash" them off with a hose and high-pressure spray nozzle or an organic insecticidal soap.

Cucumber Beetles are a striped beetle that is about 3/16" in length, greenish yellow, with three black stripes running down it's back. The spotted cucumber beetles is pretty much the same but with a dozen spots on it's back. Regardless of what these beetles look like, they're pretty nasty pests that eat your cantaloupe/muskmelon plants and spread bacterial or verticillium wilt to your plants. To prevent these beetles from getting to your plants, you can use row covers before flowering to keep them away from your plants. If the problems get too serious, you can use organic pyrethrins or organic rotenone to deal with these critters.

Pickleworms are nasty little worms that come from ugly moths. These guys don't mess with the leaves; they go straight for the fruit. Row covers early in the season are effective at keeping pickleworm moths away from your cucurbits - squash, melons, and cucumbers. One effective remedy for pickleworms is powdering your plants with diatomaceous earth. Food grade diatomaceous earth, which is composed of powdered fossilized algae, possesses razor sharp edges which are innocuous to most animals but fatal to insects. When insects such as slugs, thrips, fly maggots, aphids, grubs, caterpillars, or mites ingest diatomaceous earth, it punctures their guts and they die from dehydration. You do have to keep the powder dry though or it doesn't work. You'll have to re-apply after watering or a rain.

Squash Bugs are probably another prevalent pest. They suck the sap from your cantaloupe plant leaves, leaving them initially speckled; then the leaves wither and die. Controlling squash bugs is easier if your soil has lots of nutrients and your plants are healthy. Get rid of anything around your garden, such as old boards or anything they can hide under during the winter. It also helps to rototill or turn under your garden in the fall to eliminate places these bugs like to hide in. To get rid of the bugs, hand-picking usually works in a garden as it's not so large as to take more than an hour or two per week for a few weeks in the summer. When you pick these bugs and nymphs, have a pail of soapy water to drop them into...the soap breaks the capillary action of water so the bugs immediately sink and drown in the water.

If you find eggs attached to the underside of leaves or stems, simply crush the eggs. Lay a board or two in your muskmelon patch overnight...the bugs will congregate under the boards at night. In the morning, lift the board and capture the bugs and drop them into the soapy water pail. Organic compounds such as rotenone and pyrethrins are also effective if you have a heavy infestation of these varmints.

nvironmental factors

Muskmelons/Cantaloupe will sometimes be flavorless. This can be caused by cool weather or poor soil nutrients. Or picking the melons before they're ripe (this is really common if you purchase cantaloupe at the supermarket). Smooth rinds often are caused by cool weather. These melons will often also have poor flavor as well. To prevent lack of soil nutrients to cause lousy-flavored fruit, pay close attention especially to the potassium in your soil, but also the magnesium and the boron. Another problem we touched on earlier was poor fruit setting. This is caused by lack of pollinating insects in your area. As I wrote above, you may be able to find a local beekeeper to put a hive or 2 on your property, or you can hand pollinate. Wet weather or plant crowding can also have a negative affect on pollination.

Fusarium wilt is a soil-carried disease that affects cantaloupes. It results in the collapse of your plants when the weather is too cold and wet. Powdery mildew is another mildew that can affect your melon plants. It's whitish and powdery and grows on curcubit leaves and stems. It is also caused by wetness, but warmth and humidity rather than cool weather and rain. If the leaves are infected, they'll usually die. If the infections is severe, it can kill the whole plant. If you are able to, avoid overhead watering. If not, water early in the morning so the plants can dry out by noon or so. If you keep insect pests under control and spray your vines and leaves with a compost tea solution or a baking soda solution, you most likely won't have an issue with this disease.

Other solutions include organic sulphur sprays or a weak solution of milk and water (9:1). If you spot any of this mildew, destroy your vines at the end of the season and rotate your cantaloupes to a new area next gardening season. The best prevention is to plant resistant varieties of muskmelons/cantaloupes. Downy mildew is a leaf disease and is caused by a fungus with a long Latin name. If you really want to know the name, let me know and I'll copy and paste it in a reply. This mildew usually isn't a problem unless you have a cold spell in the 45° to 55°F range for a month or longer. The mildew shows up initially as yellow patches on your squash plant's leaves, then turns brown or tan with gray or white downy fuzz below it. Then it progresses to black patches and the leaves and sometimes the plants shrivel up and die.

To prevent downy mildew, grow squash varieties that are resistant to it. Also, allow space between your plants so they don't stay wet too long. And if the conditions appear favorable for the disease to appear (i.e. a long cool and rainy spell), spray your leaves with a compost tea. To make the tea, put compost in a bucket and fill it with water; when it settles out, fill your sprayer with the brownish water and spray your plants leaves with it. Muskmelon seedlings may be affected by a group of fungi that cause "damping off." Damping off fungi will attack the seeds, seedlings or very young plants and cause a type of rot to infect the roots or base of the plant causing sudden growth and collapse in usually (in our experience) under a day.

If you're planting in trays, use sterile potting soil, sterile trays, and avoid using your gardens soil. You can sterilize potting soil by getting it very wet and placing it in a metal container in an oven and heating it to around 160°F for about 30 minutes; the oven should be heated to around 200°F. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature, and turn the oven down a bit if the temperature exceeds 165°F. Cool the soil to at least 90°F before planting your seeds in it.

Also be aware that too much moisture is often part of the cause of seedlings damping off. Water your plants with warm water as cool temps tend to encourage damping off fungi. And the last one we'll deal with are Leaf Spots and Fruit Rot. These are caused by fungal disease and include rotting fruit, lesions on the vines, holes in the leaves, and brown-colored spot on the leaves. Rotating your crops to new areas on a 3 to 4 year rotation will help alleviate these problems. Reducing moisture can help also - using drip irrigation or watering early is helpful. Don't crowd your plants. Keep the melon patch weed free. To avoid these diseases don't grow melons in an area where any member of the squash family has been grown for 3-4 years.
